Let Go of Your Favorite Poison and Feel Better
Maybe you’re feeling tired, irritable and unable to sleep.
Is it just that you’ve over done the socializing, the alcohol and the late nights?
Or do you consume sweets, puddings, biscuits, cakes and alcohol more than you feel you should? Do you feel everything you seem to eat contains sugar?
This is because eating sugar makes us feel better and this is why you may think it is just what you need. Not so.
As Your Health Matters, you may be interested to read this! You do not have to fully understand the implications but you will get a sense of why you do reach for something sweet.
When we consume straight sugar, it enters the bloodstream instantly, instead of being slowly released like the natural complex sugars or carbohydrates. The arrival of sugar in the bloodstream stimulates the pancreas to release insulin. Insulin allows the body biochemical Tryptophan to cross the blood-brain barrier to stimulate the use of serotonin. Serotonin is known as the “feel good neurotransmitter.”
In a nutshell, this is why sugar initially makes you feel good. However, stored supplies of serotonin are soon depleted. You crave more sugar to keep your energy levels up in the “eat more sugar, crave more and more sugar” vicious cycle. When we eat more sugar, our glands release adrenaline to stimulate insulin production, to manage blood sugar levels. Adrenaline stimulates the flight response, and so we increase our heart rate, breathe quickly and shallowly, tense the muscles and become anxious.
If we don’t exercise or fight to get rid of the excess sugar, our bodies, in the presence of sugar, insulin and fat, lay down adipose tissue (fat cells). Then as the adrenaline reserves are used up metabolism slows down, the body becomes flabby, especially around the middle, and mood swings, extreme fatigue, insomnia, PMT, increased colds and flu and weight gain are likely.
You do not have to understand the above paragraph, just know that it happens!
And maybe you never realized it!
Because at this point, some people eat more sugar, especially at night, which makes the pancreas produce yet more insulin. This means there is more sugar held in the blood stream and this can lead to heightened sugar cravings, type II adult onset diabetes, premature ageing, depression and inflammation of the brain cells. The latter causes loss of memory and poor concentration, and can lead to Alzheimer’s and premature senility.
There is much more to why you should let go of your favorite poison than the few paragraphs above but simply put, you will feel better if you do.
So if you wake up after a night’s fast and are not hungry for breakfast you might be suffering from the sugar blues… caused by an excess of sugar. You may lie in bed thinking about all the things that have gone wrong, could go wrong or will go wrong. You start to worry about everything you’ve got to do, haven’t done and should have done. Ten minutes of this gets enough adrenaline pumping to get you out of bed and moving. You haven’t time for breakfast, you feel alert and on edge with worry, but by mid morning your body is so hungry, you reach for the first sugar snack of the day.
